New, longer route for Melaka River Cruise starting November

New, longer route for Melaka River Cruise starting November

MELAKA, June 3 (Bernama) -- The Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation will improve the service of Melaka River Cruise (MRC), including by expanding the existing route to make a new and longer one, in a bid to attract more visitors.

Its CEO, Azlan Abidin said the new route would cover a distance of 10km in total from Pengkalan Rama Jetty to Melaka Sentral, beginning November or December this year.

He said the existing route only covered a distance of 4.5km from the Pengkalan Rama Jetty to the Melaka River Square.

“The cruise on the new route will take 1 hour and 45 minutes. A water taxi service is also expected to be introduced as an alternative for the public and tourists alike to avoid traffic congestion in the city.

“This is part of Phase Two of the Melaka River Cleaning and Beautification Project to create more tourist attractions in the state,” he told Bernama.

Azlan said the MRC service would be closed from 6 pm tomorrow and on Wednesday in conjunction with Aidilfitri, and would resume its normal operation on Thursday.

Meanwhile, he said the corporation had also introduced a boat navigation training programme with cooperation from several agencies to give job opportunities to youths residing near the Melaka river.

“Twenty-eight participants, including seven women, have undergone part-time training for two months and covered five modules relating to boat navigation to qualify them to become a navigator and ferry captain,” he added.

Melaka, Holland to continue forging tourism interest

Melaka, Holland to continue forging tourism interest

MELAKA, June 15 (Bernama) -- The Melaka state government will continue to enhance bilateral relations with Holland in various fields especially in tourism to promote Melaka and lure more visitors from that country.

Melaka Housing, Local Government, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Datuk Tey Kok Kiew said Melaka and Holland shared many similarities especially from the historical heritage and the diplomatic relations between the two parties was established way back in 1641.

"Melaka itself is a site of Dutch government historical heritage during the colonial days, has become a tourism icon and based on record, Dutch tourist arrivals to Melaka last year was around 21,000.

"We at the state government level will continue to preserve and conserve the historical remains as assets for the tourism industry and for viewing by the future generations," he told reporters after opening the Holland Days Festival 2019 in Melaka at Stadthuys Complex in Bandar Hilir here today.

In the programme, the Dutch government via its Ambassador to Malaysia, Karin Mossenlechner presented three cattle replicas to the Melaka state government as a symbol of the friendship between the two parties.

The three cattle replicas were placed at the windmill in front of Stadthuys Square here representing the three major races in the country namely, Malay, Chinese and Indian.

Elaborating further, Tey said apart from that, Melaka is also interested in learning from Holland on flood management as the country has managed its low lying land from getting flooded.

Meanwhile, Karin said the Melaka-Dutch Day is one of the collaborations and efforts to promote the Melaka tourism attractions to Dutch citizens.

She said Dutch people love to walk in the city and stroll the streets, while exploring the shops and Melaka has a beautiful city centre.

"We can see Melaka is a charming city with lots of beautiful destinations and icons that can attract Dutch people and Europeans to visit Melaka. I too am surprise to see lots of Dutch people here in this programme," she said.

Booking Grab ride in Malaysia? Submit selfie first

Booking Grab ride in Malaysia? Submit selfie first

All Grab users in Malaysia will soon have to do a one-time selfie verification in order to use the app in the country. This is to fulfil regulatory requirements.

It will be similar to what new Grab users in Singapore are already doing, and a company spokesman said yesterday that Singaporeans would also have to comply with the Malaysian rule when using the app across the Causeway.

Grab, through an announcement on its Malaysian app and its website, informed users recently that the compulsory measure will be in place by July 12.

The website message read: "The selfie is for identity verification, safety, and may be used to assist the authorities when required. Grab ensures that your selfie and identity are secure and will not be shared with our driver-partners and merchants."

Grab added that explicit permission would be sought before any access to users' cameras.

Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke had last July announced that, as part of new rules, passengers would have to upload valid identification card or passport details when they register for a ride-hailing account. He gave a year's grace to meet the requirements.

Grab adopted facial recognition technology to meet the new rule, with first-time users required to submit a selfie of themselves before booking a ride.

The Star daily reported that the new requirement has already helped solve a robbery-cum-murder case involving a Grab driver. Two suspects were nabbed in connection with the death of Mr Mohd Hanafiee Jaafar, who was robbed and killed on the job last month.

The incident resulted in drivers fearing post-midnight trips and avoiding areas deemed dangerous, The Star said.

Within Singapore, Grab users who signed up before February this year did not have to go through selfie verification, with their identities verified by either their Facebook account or credit card details.

But new users signing up from February have had to submit selfies to successfully open their accounts.

The Grab spokesman said: "These are part of our ongoing efforts to ensure high safety and security standards on our platform for both our customers and driver-partners."

Singaporeans who use Grab during trips to Malaysia told ST that they did not mind submitting a selfie so long as it was used solely for verification purposes.

Ms Wong Shi Hui, 25, who works in events management and visits Malaysia every three months, said: "It is good that measures are in place to protect drivers as well. Selfies seem harmless enough if they can ensure a safe ride for everyone."

New VMY 2020 logo to be unveiled this month

New VMY 2020 logo to be unveiled this month

The logo for Visit Malaysia 2020 will be unveiled during the national-level Hari Raya open house at the Royal Museum in Kuala Lumpur on June 22.

“The Prime Minister himself chose the logo on the eve of Hari Raya.

“The theme and logo will be unveiled then,” Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said during his Hari Raya open house at SMK Pondok Upeh here yesterday.

A total of 586 entries were submitted for a design competition in March.

The design will also symbolise the various attractive ecotourism products in Malaysia.

Early last year, the Visit Malaysia 2020 logo did not go down well with social media users, as they generally felt that the design was not up to standard.

The emblem featured a cartoon of an orang utan in sunglasses hugging a proboscis monkey, a silhouette of the Petronas Twin Towers and a turtle on a beach, also wearing sunglasses. It included a caption: “Travel. Enjoy. Respect.”

Muhammad Bakhtiar said that events meant for Visit Malaysia 2020 would be required to be coordinated with the secretariat in charge of the campaign.

“This is to ensure it does not clash with other events under Visit Malaysia 2020,” he said.

He was responding to the proposal to bring BTS, a K-pop group, to the country for the celebration next year.

In April, Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had promised to bring the boy band to Malaysia and Tan Sri Tony Fernandes was tasked to deliver on this pledge.

Yesterday’s Raya open house was jointly hosted by Muhammad Bakhtiar, who is also the Balik Pulau MP, together with Pulau Betong assemblyman Mohd Tuah Ismail and Teluk Bahang assemblyman Zolkifly Md Lazim.

Melaka hotels feeling the pinch

Melaka hotels feeling the pinch

Despite the increase in tourist arrival figures to the historical state, the hotels here are suffering low occupancy.

The state Smart City Advisory Council chairman Khoo Poay Tiong attributed the issue to the increase in accommodation, particularly homestays, and visitors making a day trip to the state.

In 2018, there was a total of 3.13 million paid occupancies in Melaka hotels, comprising 2.15 million domestic tourists and 1.16 million foreigners.

Khoo, who is also MP for Kota Melaka, said the figures recorded in 2017 was significantly higher with 4.79 million paid hotel guests, where 3.08 million were domestic travellers while 1.704 million others were overseas tourists.

Khoo said Chinese tourists topped the number of visitors to Melaka, contributing 46.2%, followed by Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan.

He said by right the hotels should have benefited from this but the statistics indicated otherwise.

Khoo opined the tourist arrivals are not well spread to encourage these visitors to spend a night in Melaka.

He said the emerging of unregulated Airbnb homes had also caused the hotels to lose business.

“Undeniably, there are also too many hotels in Melaka that had stagnated the sales of rooms,” he said.

Khoo said to encourage the tourists to stay a night, hotels should use new marketing strategies to lure them.

Khoo said his council will invite the stakeholders, especially the Tourism Development Board, to focus on a targeted group.

He also suggested hotels to address these challenge by working closely with the media practitioners and not totally depend on social media to promote their hotels.

“Hotels should also boost their public relations mechanism to work closely with the media by hiring the right communication personnel,” he added.
