MELAKA: Sungai Melaka – dubbed as "Venice of the East" – is a clean river that is pristine at its source but picks up pollutants as it flows towards the sea.

State Public Works, Transportation and Public Utilities Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sofi Abdul Wahab said Sungai Melaka is certified as a clean river by the Water, Land and Natural Resources Ministry.

He said the river quality level stood at Class Two upstream, which dropped to Class Three and Four downstream.

"The monitoring of the water quality is done fortnightly and there are 21 evaluation stations from Tampin in Negri Sembilan up to the historic city," he said in his written reply to Datuk Sulaiman Ali (BN-Lendu) at the state assembly here on Monday (Nov 25).

He said factors contributing to the contamination of the river, among others, were caused by agricultural activities, industrial and discharging of effluents into the river.

Mohd Sofi said the state government needs cooperation from various agencies including the local population to ensure the river is free from pollution.

He added that the state Water Regulatory Body is also keeping watch to ensure the river is not polluted.
